╙───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╜
The Art Log Entry Generator is a little utility for people using
logfiles of their computer activity and having software that
does not write a log entry... or writing log entries in an
unsuitable format.
With ArtLog, you use a template for your log entries with macros
for the date and time format, and you can pass up to 9
parameters.
You can even use environment variables in your templates, giving
you a powerful and flexible method of making and modifying
templates.
Templates are of unlimited length (depending only on available
memory), so you can use ArtLog for other usage than logging :-))
(have a look on Mailing.Tpl)
ArtLog writes to stdout, can be redirected and piped as you
want.

╙───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╜
■ An IBM AT or 100% compatible PC (286, 386 or 486 processor)
■ MS-DOS, PC-DOS or DR-DOS version 3.00 or later. (Tested with 4Dos)
■ An accurate computer clock!

║ ▒▒▒▒ 4. Installation ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ║
╙───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╜
The installation is very easy: just put ArtLog.Exe in any
directory...
Create or edit the template(s) file(s) that match your needs.
╓───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╖
║ ▒▒▒▒ 5. The Template File / Macros ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ║
╙───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╜
The template files are plain vanilla ASCII. All of its content,
including white spaces, will go in your generated log. You can use
high ASCII characters.
The name of the template file MUST have the .TPL extension!!!
You can use a set of macros in it; the macros are all prefixed
with the character &.
Available Macros:
&a: Day name, 3 chars (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun)
&A: Day name, full
&d: Day number in month (01-31)
&j: Day number in year (001-366)
&b: Month name, 3 chars (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug,
Sep, Oct, Nov, )
&B: Month name, full
&m: Month number (01-12)
- Page 4 -
The Art Log Entry Generator 1.0
&y: Year, 2 numbers (00-99)
&Y: Year, 4 numbers (1900-1999)
&H: Hour 24 hours format
&I: Hour 12 hours format
&p: AM/PM
&M: Minutes (00-59)
&S: Seconds (00-59)
&&: the '&' character
&1-&9: first to ninth optional command line parameter.
&%: This one is very powerful, announcing an environment variable,
which must follow without any space: &%RA will insert the value
of your environment variable RA (if set, of course...)
Have a look at the supplied templates that output the classical log
format in BBS/Mailers software as well as other samples...
╓───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╖
║ ▒▒▒▒ 6. Running ArtLog ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ║
╙───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╜
The general format of the command line for ArtLog is:
ArtLog <Template> [arg1] [arg2] [...] [arg9] [>>Logfile]
The first parameter is mandatory: the name of the template file
to use; if you omit the TPL extension, ArtLog will add it internaly,
so "ArtLog Test" is equivalent to "ArtLog Test.Tpl".
The templates are searched in the specified directory, in the
current directory and if not found, in the ArtLog.Exe directory.
Then you can specify up to 9 string parameters that will be used
by the &1 to &9 macros.
The last thing you should do is to redirect the output to your
logfile :-))
Seems complex? Try this, using the supplied templates:
ArtLog Fd_Head.Tpl "System Information" >> Yourlog
ArtLog Fd.Tpl "The time supplied by ArtLog" >> Yourlog
But, ArtLog has many more uses:
Try the Mailing.Btm (4Dos) that will use the Mailing.Tpl
For the &%VAR trick, try ArtLog Env_Var.Tpl >> Yourlog

╙───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╜
The Art Log Entry Generator always returns an errorlevel on exit.
Here are the errorlevels and their meanings:
0: No Error, Normal Termination
1: Argument Error
2: Registration Key Error
3: Read Template Error
4: Memory Error

║ ▒▒▒▒ 8. The TequilaNetmailware Concept and the Registration ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ║
╙───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╜
This program was written for my own use, as I wanted to log
the time of my BBS computer reboot as well as the start and
end of my nightly backup in my Front Door/Remote Access Log.
The longest and most boring part was to write this f...... doc
you are reading right now!
So I think it would be unlegitimate for me to ask you any money
for it. But then again, it's not exactly freeware ....
Because I would like to know how many people are using The Art
Log Entry Generator, and also because I like Tequila, I'm asking
you, if you use ArtLog, to send me a Netmail telling me that next
time we will meet (who knows...) you'll offer me a Tequila!
You can use the Tequila.Reg file for registering and you can send
or upload it on any of the specified registration site:
Zone 2:
Send to: Philippe Feuerstein, 2:323/3@fidonet
or
Upload on: L'Art Des Choix! (+33) 75-67-61-64 14400 HST V32bis
Germany:
Send to: Peter Hampf, 2:240/11@fidonet
or
Upload on: Granny's Inn (+49) 4441-5404 14400 HST V32bis
Zone 1:
Send to: Richard Transue, 1:300/15@fidonet
or
Upload on: Meredith Place BBS 602-579-0869 14400 HST V32bis

If you do so, you will get a "registration" key to get rid of the
annoying opening delay; if you don't the delay will be more and
more annoying: 1" more every 5 runs with a max of 20".
Remember, you MUST send me a Netmail and offer me a Tequila
next time we meet!!!
If you really want to send me money, don't refrain!!!

Many thanks to Michel Barthelemy, Peter Hampf, Edmond Vandermeersch,
Richard Transue. They were foolish enough to test the betas...
Special mega-greetings to Peter Hampf for his suggestions!
Special mega-greetings to Richard Transue for the doc revision.
